Lenses that allow you to take a photo of a wide area, such an entire room of people, or a large coral reef, are called wide-angle lenses. If you have a dSLR, you might get a prime lens, which means it can't zoom in or out, it always has the same view when you look through the lens. The smaller number is the wide end of the zoom range, and the larger number is the telephoto end (zooming in, like you are taking a photo of a small bird or something far away).Īll compact cameras have zoom lenses. A lens with 2 numbers, like a 18-55mm lens, is a zoom lens. When it gets smaller, that's called "zooming out".Ī 20mm, 60mm, and 100mm lens are all examples of prime lenses. When the object you are looking at gets larger, that's called "zooming in". If you've never held a camera and zoomed in and out, now is the time to try it. Zoom lenses allow you to either rotate a lens, pull a lens forward and back, or press a button to "zoom in" on an object. There are two types of lenses, prime lenses and zoom lenses. Compact camera have lenses built in, where dSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera allow you to change lenses. You can also pick up a dSLR, point, and shoot, so I'm not really sure why compact cameras are also called point and shoots. They often come with an inexpensive lens called a kit lens. They cost more and you must buy a camera body, and one or more lenses. A dSLR is the larger camera that pros and serious amateurs use. You can't change the lens, the lens is built in. They are the small cameras that cost less. Here I'm going to try to explain some of this terminology in non-technical terms.Ĭompact cameras are also called point-and-shoot. What was focal length? What does 18-55mm mean? What is a zoom and telephoto lens? Angle of view? Focal Length? I did not understand these photography terms. I took both photos and video and it impressed me with both. When I first owned a compact camera and started looking at dSLRs, I started to see many confusing terms about lenses. The quality won’t match a lens that’s hundreds or thousands of dollars, but the quality is perfectly good for taking pictures for fun and learning. For one, you don’t have to worry about carrying around 2 extra lenses, because this one is 2-in-1. I really like the lens as someone who wants to just mess around with fisheye and macro, having never used it before. That being said, I’m very glad I tried this lens. You just can’t expect the same level of crispness as an expensive lens. You’ll also notice some edges blurring when you blow the photos up, even with the areas that are in focus.īut, that’s because this is 2 LENSES UNDER $30. On one hand, can you say “ BOKEH OMG.” On the other, it means you NEED a tripod for the most part. You can’t use the fisheye without the macro part attached, so this problem doesn’t come up for the macro portion. When you detach the fisheye lens to use the macro, there’s no cap to put on the bottom of the fisheye to make sure it stays clean.
